Biography

Graham Fagen is a Senior Lecturer at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design and an artist who lives in Glasgow. He graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 1988 and the interdisciplinary MA in Art & Architecture from the Kent Institute of Art and Design in 1990. 

At DJCAD he works with PhD, Master of Fine Art and final year BA (Hons) students.

He describes his research and practice as an enquiry into cultural formers. What shapes our culture and how in turn does that shape us and how do we communicate with and understand other cultures? He works in a variety of mediums including video, installation, sculpture, photography and text.

His exhibitions including the Busan Biennale, South Korea and the Art and Industry Bienial, New Zealand, as well as being part of Zenomap, Scotland and Venice at the 50th Venice Biennale. In Britain he has exhibited in The Other Flower Show at the Victoria & Albert Museum, Tate Britain and the Institute of Contemporary Art, London and in 1999 was invited by the Imperial War Museum, London to work as the Official War Artist for Kosovo. 

Forthcoming projects include a commissioned video work on the subject of ‘the missing’ for the collection of the National Galleries of Scotland, which will be exhibited at the opening of the newly refurbished Scottish National Portrait Gallery in November 2011. Through September to November of 2011 he will be International Artist in Residence at Artpace, San Antonio, concluding with a solo exhibition and full colour publication from November 2011 – January 8th 2012. In April 2012 he will present a major installation, theatre and film project and commission as part of the Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art with support from Creative Scotland and the National Theatre of Scotland.

Research Projects

An invited solo exhibition and publication exploring the contemporary concept of portraiture. 'So what does somebodyelse all add up to? In many ways it is a critical masterclass, a "construction of individual and national identities.' From Moira Jeffrey's review in Scotland on Sunday 22 Feb 2009.

Shadows in Paradise

An invitation to exhibit in the group exhibition Shadows in Paradise at FRAC Nord, Calais, which focused on work by artists that examined war. I exhibited Theatre, a work originally commissioned by the Imperial War Museum, London in my role as official War Artists for Kosovo. And a commission by FRAC Nord-Pas de Calais, France to make a new work for the Talbot House Museum, Poperinge, Belgium to coincide with this exhibition. This new commission focused on the use of the Museum as a safe house during the First World War and a bronze Christmas Tree - a symbol of peace - was made and installed in the Museum Garden. 5 July - 11 November 2007

Downpresserer

An invited solo exhibition at the Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow exhibiting the results of a research trip to Jamaica examining the influences of slavery and Empire on the cultures of Scotland and Jamaica. The exhibition was planned to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery and was support by the British Council and Glasgow City Council.

Killing Time

An invited solo exhibtion and publication in collaboration with theatre drector Graham Eatough at Dundee Contemporary Arts, exploring the ground between contemporary art installation , film and theatre. Supported bythe Scottish Arts Council, Dundee City Council and Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art. 9 September - 5 November 2006.

Clean Hands Pure Heart

An invited solo exhibition and publication at the Tramway, Glasgow in collaboration with Adrian Sherwood. An exhibition of the recorded studio performance of Ghetto Priest singing the re arranged version of the Robert Burns song The Slave's Lament from 1792.
Supported by the Scottish Arts Council, Glasgow City Council, Carnegie and Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art. 11 February - 13 March 2005.
