Research Projects
Facial Reconstruction of Ancient Egyptian 'Screaming Mummy'. May - June 2008
Commissioned by Atlantic Productions.
Produced in collaboration with Dr Caroline Wilkinson and Janice Aitken.
The analysis and depiction of the facial appearance of an ancient Egyptian mummy known as the 'screaming man'. Discovered in a royal burial cache in 1886. Theorised to be a disgraced son of Rameses III who tried to overthrow his father. This project employed Computed Tomography (CT) data of the skull along with images of the soft tissue remains to inform the digital reconstruction. The reconstruction process utilises state of the art 'Haptic' feedback technology alongside virtual sculpting software. This methodology allows for non-invasive research. The finished reconstruction will be featured in an upcoming television documentary produced by Atlantic Productions.
Painted Facial Reconstruction of Johann Sebastian Bach. February - March 2008
Commissioned by the Bachhaus Museum.
Produced in collaboration with Dr Caroline Wilkinson, Janice Aitken and PDR (Cardiff).
A steriolithograph rapid prototype of the facial reconstruction of Johann Sebastian Bach was produced by PDR in Cardiff. This required the addition of glass eyes and painting to create a life like bust of the composer for museum display. Contemporary depictions and descriptions were utilised to inform the life like rendering of the bust. The finished product went on display as part of the Bach Through the Mirror of Medicine exhibition in the Bachhaus museum, Eisenach, in March of 2008 and is featured in the exhibition catalogue. It was also featured in newspaper and media reports worldwide.
