Research Study
Research Degrees
Our research student community benefits from a highly active research environment either based within the Visual Research Centre or host academic units. The Visual Research Centre provided study space either at DCA (Dundee’s contemporary art space) or its annexe in a 24/7 Georgian Terrace. The VRC is the base for symposia, events, exposition of research and display using Centrespace and publishing. It also houses our archives: Centre for Artists’ Books; Demarco Photographic Archive; Artists’ Prints; and the REWIND Archive and Micro Cinema.
The PhD or MPhil profile extends from recent Masters graduates to experienced academics and professionals with people who are returning to education after a break of several years. We have been developing doctoral study in art and design and interdisciplinary research since 1991, and have championed the practice-led PhD.
Some recent PhD completions:
- Innovation - Beyond Craft: identifying and verifying a visual method for analysing innovative craft practice between 1870 and 2001 (Fanke Peng, April 2010)
- Designs for Life: Art, Science and Collaboration. A practice-led study in fine art printmaking (Paul Harrison, March 2010)
- An Exploration of Sound & Interactivity (Kirsty Stansfield, January 2010)
- An Exploration of Oral Tradition in Dene Society - story, image, identity (Patrick Scott, December 2009)
- The inter-relationships of video games and new media within western and non western digital social structures and cultures (Tack Woo, December 2009)
- Cultural Identity and Nationalism (Stefanie Reetz, November 2009)
- 3d Visualisation & Animation in medical imaging (John McGhee, August 2009)
