Research Assessment Exercise 2008

The Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) is a process of assessing research in Higher Education Institutions across the United Kingdom.

Results from the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) confirmed that 80 per cent of DJCAD’s research output is of international standing.

Taking the top three grades, the results show that 35 per cent of the research is 'world-leading' (the highest grade), 20 per cent is internationally excellent (the second highest grade) and 25 per cent is internationally recognised (the third highest grade).

This places DJCAD amongst the leading research centres in the country for art and design and first in Scotland for world-leading research. Over 240 research outputs from 64 researchers (ninety percent of eligible staff) were submitted to the 2008 RAE.

Our Submission to the RAE was recognised for the following:

  • a mature research environment with clear strategic objectives systematically pursued between 2001-7
  • the submission’s distinctiveness in demonstrating collaboration and interdisciplinary research
  • research income is well above the UK median with particular success in research council awards
  • practice-based work is complemented by a significant volume of journal papers
  • collaboration with DCA alongside other strategic partnerships serves to stimulate research activity
  • structured support for staff, an active research environment and PhD community
  • researchers have been influential nationally and internationally in promoting Scottish culture benefit to society is evident through external awards, scholarships and archival  deposits
