10 – 11 June

A symposium co-convened with the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, co-hosted by Dundee Contemporary Arts, and led by Dr Glenn Adamson, Fraser Bruce, Sean Kingsley and Dr Louise Valentine. The symposium explores the radical and multiple ways that creative people are experimenting with ideas, and will nurture unusual conversations by presenting a diverse range of perspectives concerned with innovation and ingenuity.

Twelve inspiring speakers from across the globe will explore the innovative ways they are using prototypes, including the Turner Prize winning artist, Simon Starling; the NASA space architect, Constance Adams; international business guru Michael Schrage and, interactive jeweller, Hazel White.

Chicks on Speed: Don’t Art, Fashion, Music (Dundee Contemporary Arts)

5 June – 8 August

Chicks on Speed bring their punk-inspired DIY ethic to Dundee Contemporary Arts. The group’s first major solo show in the UK interrogates the boundaries of art, craft, fashion and music.

DCA galleries will be transformed into a live laboratory, studio, performance space and installation as Don’t Art, Fashion, Music merges traditional techniques with new research in technical innovation. Collaborative projects with local and international artists and makers will unfold over the weeks, including the production of a guitar stiletto.

Innovation & Creative Development in Craft (University of Dundee, Dalhousie Building)

9 – 27 June

Over the past two years, five craft practitioners had the opportunity to update their creative practice through a Crafts Creative Development Bursary with access to facilities and staff at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, funded by the Scottish Arts Council. The new and innovative work created by textile artists Jeanette Sendler, Gillian Cooper, Lisa Gallagher, jeweller Sarah Kettley and (post-) industrial designer Roy Shearer illustrate the creative process of making and developing ideas.

Knowledge Through Making Exhibition (Centrespace, Visual Research Centre, DCA)

10 June – 9 July

Knowledge through Making will explore the methodology of making as a knowledge-based approach to material culture and innovation. This will be exposed though the work of the Past Present Future Craft Practice research project.
