Craft Research

DJCAD

Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design (DJCAD) is an international art and design college. It is one of the few art and design institutions in the UK that is part of a world-class University, renowned for its pioneering research and creative practice. This commitment to excellence infuses all that it does. Duncan of Jordanstone has been rated as the top institution in Scotland for research in art and design, and one of the best in the whole of the UK.

Thirty-five percent of its research is deemed to be 'world leading', while a further 20% is 'internationally excellent'. Only three other institutions in the UK have a higher proportion of 'world leading' research, out of the total of 72 universities and colleges who submitted research in art and design in the Research Assessment Exercise 2008.

Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design believes that teaching and learning is led by research, which explains why it employs so many practitioners in art and design who are engaged in world class research. New knowledge, ideas and innovation in media and techniques flows from this research into the teaching environment.

The College is an advanced art school reaching out from its traditional strengths and commitment to studio based teaching, to connect with the challenges and opportunities of our fast changing world. In doing this, it is radically redefining the roles of the artist and designer, and highlighting a new relevance for the visual disciplines.
