Textile Design - FAQs
What kind of textiles do you do?
On this course the students learn how to design the material itself. But do do this they must also understand the context in which their material products will be used. This might be something that is worn, or used for lighting or a pattern that is projected.
Does 'material' mean cloth in a traditional sense?
Not necessarily. We encourage students to experiment with a huge range of materials and technologies. This means plastics, wool, paper, wires, fibre optics etc. It really does depend on what you are designing for.
What do I need to be good at to do Textile Design?
Students have a wide range of differing strengths on the course and this makes for a lively studio environment. A healthy curiosity for the subject area itself is beneficial and a strong desire to interpret what you see around you through drawing and making.
