Jewellery & Metal Design - FAQs
Can I study on a part-time basis?
Yes this is an option, our learning programme is very flexible and we endeavour to accommodate individual needs wherever possible.
Can I enter the course at level 3 or level 4?
Yes in exceptional circumstances this is possible depending on relevant qualifications and previous experience.
Do I have to be a girl?
No, although our course is popular with girls, historically this has not always been the case. Ultimately we aim for a diverse cohort of students in each year group, boys and girls, school leavers and mature students, ethnic backgrounds etc
How easy is it to get a place?
Places on the course are in great demand and you may have to apply several times before gaining entry.
What accommodation do you have?
There is both studio and workshop accommodation. Our workshop is the biggest in Scotland and it is where you will learn to create your designs. The workshop is also the space where the work you create also shapes your identity.
What about new technology?
Traditional hand skills and workshop practice form the foundation for jewellery & metal design. These are continually renewed and refreshed through the inclusion of new technologies such as laser cutting and computer aided design and manufacture.
What's so special about studying Jewellery & Metal Design at Dundee?
We dont have the best facilities or the best equipment but we work hard at providing a supportive community to enable you to create work that is intellectually, socially and culturally engaged. Thats probably why one of our graduates last year picked up the UKs top prize for jewellery from Goldsmiths at New Designers.
What sort of job could I expect to get with my qualification?
The flexibility that the course offers allows for a diverse range of career opportunities. The majority of our graduates aim to become self employed designer makers or work in the jewellery industry but we also equip students with the skills they need to flourish in a variety of design related fields, such as exhibition curation, teaching, arts management and much more.
Where can I find more information before I join the course?
We have a Facebook group DOJJAM where students, staff and friends of the course will post images, news items and discuss issues related to contemporary jewellery & metal design practice. This is an open group and anyone can join. Klimt02.net is a fantastic European website that has information on current exhibitions, books to read and competitions to enter. Benchpeg is another Facebook group and web site with an emphasis on the UK Jewellery Industry. With hard work and determination being part of the jewellery & metal design community leads to a fulfilling and creative life.
