Interior Environmental Design - Student Profiles

Karen MacPherson

IED, Level 4 2010

"Interior and Environmental Design at DJCAD is a challenging and versatile course teaching students to broaden their design thinking over a vast spectrum of projects. Ranging from lighting, space planning, furniture design, architectural detailing and model construction, the course allows students to explore different avenues and skills relative to their design field.

Presentations play an essential part of the course, encouraging students to speak confidently about their design work to small and large groups of people. The course embraces individuality, and allows students breathing space to develop their own style and presentation techniques - a feature that has helped me seek employment after graduating."

"The Interior Environmental Design course at DJCAD really help me tailor my skills and abilities over the four years of study . I got the opportunity to work on a range of interesting projects and work with students from other disciplines, which is invaluable experience. The main appeal of the course for me at the time was that I could focus on aspects of design which I enjoy and build on that, you were not forced to produce the same as everyone else."

Graeme Kennedy

IED, Level 2 2009

"Second year in IED is pushing me to grow as a design student more and more. Moving up from first year has proved to be even more exiting and engaging. The exiting thing is that this is just the tip of the iceberg! It's up to you to make it what you want and to use the people and opportunities given - go farther than that though! I've learned already to some extent how good it is to be a designer with the freedom and support given in IED. Love it."

"The difference between Interior & Environmental Design, and other similar courses, is that at DJCAD we get diverse and unique projects that are mentally and emotionally stimulating whilst challenging us in many different ways. There is an exciting range of material from painting to AutoCAD to cater for everyone's design styles and needs. The working atmosphere in the studio is great, everyone coming together embracing new ideas, welcoming new students we're just a big friendly family."

"Stereotyped as the discipline that focuses on wallpaper and curtains, people could not be more wrong. The elements that are included in Interior & Environmental Design are fantastic and I have learnt more skills in the past year than I have ever done before! For me the drawing classes were the best where I not only improved on my drawing skills but also my confidence. The open plan studios are brilliant, allowing great communication with all the years in the departments. The friendships that I have made are life long - it is just a fantastic atmosphere! I love when the studios are decorated with examples of work as you just feel constantly inspired and are always trying to push yourself to achieve more. If you have any doubt which course to choose I would recommend Interiors! Every aspect of it is exciting and you won't have any regrets!"

Nora Chou

IED, Level 2, 2009

"As an International student from Hong Kong, moving to Dundee was a massive change. I entered the interior and environmental design course with a fine art background and in many ways this has encouraged me to not only consider but to express my thoughts and ideas from a different angle. Since I have had no previous experience with AutoCAD, model making or technical drawings, I quickly began to learn about the different ways to better communicate a particular design solution for a set project, with the help and support from my course mates and tutors. The 6 week projects we are assigned are usually of a diverse range. We are constantly challenged to assert our creativity in different forms, whether it be the manual construction of furniture and lighting design, or designing for a hypothetical client, hence maximizing our skill development. Studying Interior and Environmental Design has without a doubt been a constant and incredible learning experience."
