Interior Environmental Design

Level 1

  • gain a general understanding of space, place and design
  • develop your drawing, model making, digital and creative thinking skills
  • discover the history, theory and practice of art & design
  • work in creative teams to present Interior Environmental Design concepts

IED student work Level 1 of Interior Environmental Design is all about learning. You will learn both creative and practical design skills.

Exploring Creativity: You will learn a range of techniques which will develop your understanding of space within a particular environmental context. You will participate in both group and independent study.

Creativity, Process & Expression: In this course you will explore the functionality of objects, elements and structures with the end user in mind.

Introduction to CAD 1A: We will introduce you to the basics of Computer Aided Design using a range of 2D and 3D software such as AutoCAD, 3DMAX DESIGN, Sketchup and Photoshop in relation to studio project work.

Introduction to CAD 1B: In this course you will refine the skills you have developed in CAD 1A.

Composition, Space & Movement: This course covers context, function, materials and basic construction principles. In this module you will refine presentation skills and develop your drawing, model making, CAD, workshop and research skills.

History & Theory: We will introduce you to the history, theory and practice of art and design.

Level 2

  • learn about more focused tasks that allow you to investigate materials, colour and structure
  • develop your 2D, 3D & 4D skills and apply these to projects
  • review the history of design in comparison to contemporary design

In Level 2 you will apply and develop your skills.

IED student work Sensory Space: In this course you will apply visual techniques to special thinking and will create your own independent visual approach to design projects. This can include projects such as exhibition, interiors or other contexts.

Environmental Expression: Develop your 2D, 3D and 4D skills and refine 3D workshop abilities to create and interior, environment or object in a team or individual project.

Creative Connection: Refine your skills in spatial process, materials, colour, research, structural awareness, ethical & ecological concerns, effective time management and personal visual process.

CAD Image / Modelling 2A: This course introduces you to practical and conceptual contexts of CAD in relation to a relatively challenging Interior Environmental Design task. You will develop your skills in 2D and 3D software.

CAD Modelling / Multi-Media 2B: You will learn how to express your ideas using 2D, 3D and 4D software. You will support your work with the use of sound, digital materials, lighting and walkthrough animations.

Design Studies: This course will cover a historical review of design and how it has changed over the years in comparison to contemporary design.

Level 3

  • discover the issues that affect interior design
  • develop critical thinking
  • opportunity to participate in an overseas study trip
  • optional international exchange
  • participate in an international design project with other design institutions

In Level 3 you begin to explore Interior Environmental Design in more complex and socially demanding ways. By participating in an international exchange you will examine the design process from a different point of view. You will submit projects for national and international design competitions and you will be required to undertake an industrial work placement for a minimum of four weeks.

The Creative Potential: You will explore the cultural, environmental and philosophical issues that affect interior design. We will encourage you to develop your critical and conceptual thinking while you challenge yourself to embrace experimental tasks.

Design Studies: The continuation of this course will cover design futures and professional practice within design careers.

Level 4

  • create your own personal interior project
  • exhibit your work at an exciting end of year exhibition and at a major design event in the UK where you will be able to seek employment opportunities
In Level 4 you create.

Creative Realisation: You will create a personal interior thesis project, usually a small minor thesis followed by a larger major thesis, using the technical, aesthetic, organisational, intellectual and creative skills that you have developed in previous levels. With an emphasis on independence, thorough research and concept development you will present your thesis to peers, staff and the public in an exhibition of final projects.

Design Dissertation: You will produce a substantial research based written study on a topic of your choice that may be connected to your Interior Environmental Design thesis work. This course covers research outcomes in history, theory and professional practice
