General Foundation - Course Outline

Semester 1
Foundation Studies 1:
- a broad approach to drawing including observational and academic drawing from life models and objects
- an introduction to linear and volumentric space, form, tone and proportion structure, weight and movement
- demonstration of the ways initial studies and explorations inform subsequent outcomes
- introduction to the development of self-critical practice
- introduction of appropriate standards of presentation and documentation
- introductory lectures in Art & Media and Design history, theory and practice
Foundation Studies 2:
- observational and academic drawing and painting from life models and objects
- further exploration of line, space, form, tone, proportion, structure, weight and movement
- a strong emphasis on the appropriate selection and creative design application of materials and media
- introduction to ephemeral sculpture and installation practice
- on-going personal journal development
- exploration on form and function in design
- introduction of visual and material culture
Foundation Studies 3:
- exploration of line, space, form, tone, proportion, structure, weight and movement
- practice in a range of techniques and the creative application of materials
- portfolio preparation and presentation skills
- continuing development of personal reflective journal
- thematic lectures in Art and Design History and Theory, wherever feasible relating directly to current studio projects and designed to explore the interconnectedness of art and design while respecting the essential differences
- presentations by DJCAD Programmes of study and studio visits introducing a clearer understanding of degree disciplines
Semester 2
Foundation Studies 4:
- the further development of source material towards resolving outcomes, enhancing visual literacy and enriching imaginative, cognitive, referencing and technical capacities
- introduction of relevant research methods
- development of visual thinking and documentation using personal journals and other media
- development of creative thinking and studio practice on the basis of project briefs that may be interpreted by the student in a variety of ways and expressed in diverse media
- portfolio preparation and presentation skills for progression towards second year supported by a personal statement
Foundation Studies 5:
- a series of themed lectures and seminars highlighting the influences of key individuals on the production and development of contemporary art and design
- analysis of material objects and artefacts in formal terms and their placement in the wider historical, social and cultural context
- discussion of contemporary issues in art and design theory, process and practice
- exploration of new media in relation to contemporary developments in art and design
* Please note: the majority of students will proceed to the specialist programme of their choice. However successful completion of the course does not confer the automatic right of entry to the second year of a specialist degree programme. Entry to the second year is competitive, by submission of a portfolio of work and is subject to the number of places available. So in other words, you will need to work hard!
