Course Introduction

Fine Art student at workFine Art at DJCAD provides a springboard to the world of contemporary practice.

Dundee graduates succeed, receive acclaim, and work across the many opportunities offered by the professional and creative industries. Our alumni exhibit in key international arts venues, win national and international prizes, and go on to undertake research in universities worldwide. 2010 Turner Prize winner Susan Phillipz is a former student as is the 2010 Turner Prize shortlisted artist, Luke Fowler.

Our programmes provide a combination of teaching, workshops, seminars, study visits, lectures and critiques that enable a student to develop the skills, experience, and conceptual knowledge needed to become a successful artist. To support the intellectual rigour required to make successful work, we offer access to well equipped workshops for fabricating in steel, bronze casting, resin casting, plaster casting, etching, screen-printing, lithography and block printing. Our wood-workshop equips students with the skills to confidently use both hand and power tools in the manufacturing of their work. Our digital suites offer the latest equipment in filming, sound recording and editing.

We provide a truly interdisciplinary experience here in Dundee, and our students will have access to a wide range of media and workshops. We feel that it is important that the learning environment nurtures both a personal confidence and growth within the subject whilst enabling a broad understanding of the professional infrastructures beyond the college.

Our students work with drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, printmaking, performance, film, photography, digital and computer imaging, moving image, sound, artists books and creative writing. Some students focus on a single discipline whilst others deploy a multidisciplinary approach.

Fine Art student at workProfessional practice is embedded in our programme and all students will experience an external placement or a live project in collaboration with external professional partners.

The proximity of Dundee Contemporary Art brings an international window to the arts and many of DCA’s visiting artists and speakers offer lectures and workshops that further enhance the Dundee Fine Art experience.

Dundee staff have achieved the highest rating for research in Scotland and this international expertise infuses the taught curriculum. Staff exhibit internationally and maintain a high professional profile in the arts, ensuring that the teaching is based on a current and vital understanding of current practice. In 2015, Art and Media tutor Graham Fagen is representing Scotland at the Venice Biennial, the most international of art events.

History, theory and contextual studies provide students with a rounded and integrated curriculum enabling the acquisition of those important transferable skills that include an ability to; collaborate, reflect, write, present, and communicate well.

Step out into the art world with an understanding of yourself within that professional context.

Articulate your ideas and build on your experience in any creative arena.

Fine Art is one of three courses that comprise the Art & Media programme at DJCAD. This programme has an already established reputation as the only interdisciplinary arts curriculum in Scotland. The bringing together of three distinct pathways under the art and media programme offers a broad educational experience and access to a wide range of staff expertise while also allowing you to gain deep knowledge and expertise in your chosen subject pathway of Fine Art.
