Art, Philosophy, Contemporary Practices - Course Outline

Level 1

Students can enter Art, Philosophy, Contemporary Practices after successfully completing our Art and Design General Foundation course (UCAS Code WW12) or on successful completion of a recognised Foundation Course or equivalent

In the Art and Design General Foundation course you will learn the core values which will enrich and expand your personal visual language as well as a semester two module in Philosophy that will introduce you to key thinkers and themes from the history of philosophy, and build skills of critical reading and thinking.

Level 2

If you have completed  a recognised Foundation Course or equivalent you can apply directly to Level 2 of Art, Philosophy, Contemporary Practices using UCAS Code WV15

In Level 2, alongside your studio practice modules (Supporting Practice 1 and 2) you will attend a programme of Interdisciplinary Studies lectures, seminars etc. You will also take two modules in Philosophy:

- Hume and Recent European Philosophy

- Aesthetics and Kant.

Level 3

Level 3 consists of two semester long Self Directed Practice modules in studio practice where you will develop a relevant programme of study and research with multi-disciplinary options. A greater emphasis is placed on the development of your identity as an artist through explorative and experimental work. Interdisciplinary Critiques and seminars are a feature of this module. An exchange with a foreign university is an option many students enjoy in this year. Professional practice is embedded in our programme and all students will experience an external placement or a live project in collaboration with external professional partners.

You will also undertake two semester-long modules in philosophy from a range of options. The following is a list of typical module options:

  • Aesthetics of the Sublime
  • Gender, Feminism, and Political Theory
  • Philosophies of History
  • Kant's Critique of Pure Reason
  • Spinoza's Ethics
  • Question of Vision in Art and Philosophy
  • Nietzsche's Beyond Good and Evil
  • Marx's Capital
  • Understanding Dialogue and Interpretation

Level 4

  • Studio Practice
  • Dissertation
  • Exhibition

In Level 4 the year-long Honours Creative Practice module provides you with a period of sustained visual enquiry and practice which will culminate in the presentation/exhibition of your work for Degree Show examination at the end of the year. Depending on your individual strengths and interests you will write a dissertation that closely reflects on your creative practice in relation to your philosophical studies.
