Guidance on how to apply
Generally students commence research degrees in either September or January, though other start dates can be considered. Although applicants can apply for a research degree immediately after undergraduate study, applicants are normally expected to have a Masters degree. In addition a period of work experience is not necessary but considered valuable. For non-English speakers, evidence of an appropriate English language qualification (an IELTS minimum score of 6.0 or equivalent with a minimum of 5.5 in each category) is required.
The Research Degree application form can be downloaded from the website:
http://www.dundee.ac.uk/postgraduate/research/how_to_apply.htm
The application form must be accompanied by
- Research proposal
- Folio of work if relevant to the research proposal
- For non-English speakers, evidence of English language qualification
You must also include the names of two referees and send them the Referees Form (downloaded from the application form webpages) requesting them to complete this and send to the University as soon as possible. We are unable to consider applications until we have received all the relevant information and accompanying documents.
Evaluation of applications
We receive a large number of applications each year and we therefore have to be very selective. The key considerations in assessing applications for research degrees are:
- Quality of the applicant's previous qualifications and /or professional experience
- Quality of the research proposal
- Relevance of the research proposal to DJCAD research strategies and interests/themes
- Availability of relevant supervisory expertise
- Availability of facilities and resources to support the research proposal
- For applicants whose first language is not English, evidence of an appropriate language qualification.
In addition we will only be able to offer a place on our research degrees programme if you can demonstrate how you will fund your studies.
The process for evaluating an application can take several weeks as the application will be circulated to a number of different professors for comment and finally to the Convenor of the DJCAD Research Committee. Depending on the outcome of these discussions, you may be invited to attend an interview to allow us to explore the proposal in greater detail.
If you would like advice before you commence the application process, or wish to discuss a draft proposal, then please contact the Head of Postgraduate Studies through the contact address below.
