DJCAD Students Get Opportunity To Exhibit Winning Mural Design in NYC
Published on Fri 7 December 2012 by Array
Belhaven Scottish Ale and Duke of Montrose Scottish Pub have launched an exclusive competition for emerging artists at Duncan of Jordonstone College of Art and Design, at the University of Dundee, Scotland, to celebrate the opening of new Scottish pub Duke of Montrose, Park Slope, Brooklyn, where students are invited to design a Scottish themed mural for the chance to fly to New York City to exhibit their permanent design.
Briefed to honor Scottish heritage, the collaboration between the Scottish Brewery and new Scottish Pub is a natural fit - 1719 marks the earliest documented evidence of the Belhaven Brewery in Dunbar, Scotland, and Duke of Montrose is the second of Michael Ferrie’s and Steven Owen’s New York based authentic Scottish Pubs.
Say’s Ferrie:”As a born and bread Dundonian I am particularly keen to see the creativity of the Duncan of Jordanstone art and design students. The mural will be a focal point within the new bar and will be especially iconic to me with my Dundee roots.” This is echoed by partner Owen, who says: “The Duke of Montrose title is linked to my ancestral Graham clan so it will be exciting to see how students’ interpret the brief to combine our authentic Scottish vision with the Belhaven brand image.”
Belhaven Marketing Manager Sonia Lawrence commented: “Scottish heritage, passion and imagination is at the heart of everything Belhaven does so it seems fitting to celebrate the launch of an authentic Scottish bar in New York and harness imagination in the form of a Belhaven/Duke of Montrose inspired mural design.
In February 2013, one winner will be selected by an international judging panel, including Belhaven Head Brewer George Howell, Duke of Montrose partners Michael Ferrie, Steven Owen and Alex Wade, and renown journalists from US publications Hospitality Design, Papermag and Brooklyn Based. The winner will be flown to New York City courtesy of Belhaven, where they will paint their winning design into an eight foot mural on the Duke of Montrose wall.
