Dundee group draw inspiration from US collective to host 'Fun-A-Day' exhibition

Students from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design DJCAD will this week join artists from 23 other cities across the world in holding a collaborative exhibition of work from an international cast of artists.
The Bradshaw Art Space at DJCAD, part of the University of Dundee, will host the first Fun-A-Day Dundee show from Friday, February 24th. This builds on the work of the Philadelphia-based Artclash Collective, which has been organising Fun-A-Day shows in their city for the past eight years.
Participants choose a project and produce one piece of artwork every day for the entire month of January, with the resulting 31 pieces creating a narrative outlining each artist's journey through the first month of the year.
The Artclash Collective organise projects and shows that aim to be fun, inclusive and participatory, and the Fun-A-Day project has been adopted by a number of groups of artists who then hold their own shows.
This year, there will be 21 shows held in the United States, along with three international shows, including the Dundee event, which will see DJCAD students be joined by students from other parts of the University, and other local artists in hosting the exhibition.
Morgan Cahn, a Year 3 Fine Art student at DJCAD and organiser of the Dundee exhibition, said the ethos of Fun-A-Day meant it was possible to break down the barriers that sometimes surround art.
"Projects vary from the lighthearted to the serious, high-brow to low-brow, and this year's list of mediums includes photos, drawings, videos, textiles and more," she said. "Visitors should expect the gallery to be jam- packed with art of all different types.
"Fun-A-Day is a simple concept that produces beautiful results and seeks to remove the barriers to creativity by offering opportunities and invitations for participation. The project seeks to create a welcoming forum for people to share what they do, to strengthen existing communities of artists, and to kick-start new ones.
"Fun-a-Day is an open invitation to foster a daily creative practice. It began as a way for the originators of the project to keep each other motivated and maintain their creative practices through the month of January.
"The project spread as others embraced the idea and vowed to not only complete their project, but to encourage their friends to do the same. Since its inception in 2004, the project has shown tens of thousands of pieces by hundreds of artists."
The inaugural Fun-A-Day Dundee exhibition will take place at the Bradshaw Art Space from February 24th-March 5th, with performances from some of the participants on the opening night. The opening hours are 9.30am-5pm on weekdays and 10.30am-4.30pm on Saturdays. Entry is free, and open to all.
