Snowy Scandinavian landscapes knitted into fabric

Victoria Logan was so influenced by a work placement in Finland that her final collection takes its inspiration from the atmosphere of the landscape she experienced there. Victoria has produced selection of textured fabrics in cool blues, greys and whites mirroring the beauty and isolation of the Scandinavian natural environment. Her fabrics are made from lambs wool and most are felted to produce a dense fabric. The patterns are influenced by snowflake structures as well as the textures and formations of ice and snow. The patterns are both knitted into the material and etched into it with a laser cutter.

Victoria studied at the University of Lapland for one term during her third year. She found the art school in Rovaniemi, Finland to be very friendly and welcoming. The students there utilise a lot of technology and her time there has made her more likely to use the computer for her own work. During her travels in the flatlands and forests of Lapland Victoria really noticed how sparsely populated it is. She wanted to play with this sense of isolation within a large landscape. While she was in Scandinavia Victoria's passion for photography grew and the photographs that she took have become the source material for her final collection of fabrics. Victoria will present her fabrics as very simple, minimalistic garments.

Last summer Victoria undertook a placement at Tait and Style, and Orkney based business run by scarf-designer Ingrid Tait. This placement related strongly to Victorias dissertation which was on the relationship between Scottish and Finnish textile design.
