Kimberley uses found objects in a precious way making exquisite pieces from beach slate. She combs the pebble beach of the West Coast village of Easdale where her family live and carefully smoothes, shapes and varnishes these small pieces of slate by hand. She then uses these natural elements to assemble necklaces and bracelets with the luxurious addition of smooth gold and silver glinting alongside the steel grey of the slate. In some of her pieces she has utilised laser cutting to make marks on the smooth surfaces of the stones.
Kimberley, who moved to Dundee from Argyll to study at Dundee College initially, has always used natural materials and been influenced by living by the sea. She has focused on using slate because of its capacity to be subtly altered to suit the jewellery design while still retaining its full character. This character has been lent to more precious materials through the process of casting the pebbles in gold and silver.
