The work of Jessica Ramm is influenced by the human desire to find in things a greater meaning than themselves and her experiences of myth and religion in different cultures. Her kinetic installations, which include tiny metal mechanisms pecking away at bronze orbs and glass bulbs, bear out a sort of endless productivity and compulsive communication.
One such work, entitled Dispersal, is fuelled by an 18th Century, weight driven, clock mechanism which was originally from Brechin Town Hall. The mechanism, and the welding lessons that have enabled Jessica to repair it, have been provided by her father Greg Miller who is also a graduate of Duncan of Jordanstone ( MSc Electronic Imaging, 2007). Jessica has coaxed advice and tips from a diverse range of college staff and commercial trades-people, becoming a regular at the electric suppliers counters, getting advice on how to wire up differently for the specific bulbs she is using.
