The aim of this study will be to develop a theory-based intervention to promote
the provision of smoking cessation advice to people attending primary care dental
practices.
The objectives are to :
1. define an appropriate model for a smoking cessation intervention that could
be applied in general dental practice
2. to identify, within a theoretical framework, factors that influence dental
health practitioners and patients in the provision and receipt of smoking cessation
advice within primary care dentistry
3. develop a theory-based intervention that promotes the provision of smoking
cessation services in primary care dentistry by targeting those factors identified
in 2. that are amenable to change
4. to establish methods of identifying generalisable samples of dental health
professionals and their patients.
A review of studies that have delivered smoking cessation interventions in dental and medical practice will be undertaken. Interviews with dental health practitioners and patients will be held to elicit attitudes toward the provision and receipt of smoking cessation advice. This will help identify factors that are modifiable and the best predictors of behavioural intentions to develop a theory-based intervention that promotes smoking cessation services in primary care.
This study would add to knowledge about the use of theory to develop interventions to change behaviour of health care professionals.
