November 2011

A short report for NHS Lanarkshire, which was based on the findings of Smile4life: the Oral Health of Homeless People across Scotland, published earlier this year, has won the Keith Woods Memorial Prize 2011. The prize is awarded annually by the British Association for the Study of Community Dentistry (BASCD) for a written piece of original research work or good practice in dental health needs assessment or dental epidemiology, and is only bestowed if work of appropriate quality is judged to have been made.
The winning submission, Smile4life Survey: Oral Health Needs Assessment for Homeless People in Lanarkshire, was written by Emma Coles and Ruth Freeman of the Dental Health Services Research Unit (DHSRU), in conjunction with Albert Yeung of NHS Lanarkshire. The Smile4life national survey examined the oral health, general health and psycho-social wellbeing of over 850 homeless people in seven NHS Boards across Scotland.
The prize was awarded at the BASCD Presidential Scientific Meeting in London on 24 November 2011.
