BIOGRAPHY

Seaton is an Honorary Professor in the School of Design. He is responsible for developing and encouraging research skills and knowledge especially for postgraduate MPhil and PhD scholars. Whilst he acts as research mentor to many students in the School of Design, and in DJCAD as a whole, he enthusiastically promotes and supervises a small cohort of students who together form the Centre for the Study of Natural Design. This group also constitutes the Natural Design Group, one of five research groups in the School of Design. The Natural Design Group sees design as an expanded activity beyond what currently constitutes the design domain and central to this is the need to develop a world in which nature and mankind co-operate as symbiotic, co-evolving living systems. Seaton has carried out research for Historic Scotland and several government departments. He has been on the Board of Scottish Natural Heritage and has worked with several environmental NGOs in the voluntary sector. He is currently Chairman of Scottish Centres, a charitable organisation involved in outdoor education. Seaton’s early research experience was concerned with design for domestic animal production. He retains his interest in agriculture and a wide range of rural design issues. He was presented with an OBE for his work on the Scottish environment.
