BIOGRAPHY

Fraser Bruce is a product development engineer working on the Innovative Product Design (IPD) programme at the University of Dundee. He holds an undergraduate degree in integrated and manufacturing engineering; a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) for a thesis which explored the effects of social networking inside a medical device organization; and is currently in the process of working towards becoming a Chartered Engineer.

Fraser started his career in the early 90’s as an application service engineer with Laser Ecosse Limited, a small laser manufacturing business in Dundee, where he specialized in material processing, system repair and beam path alignment of industrial carbon dioxide (CO2) lasers. In 1997 he left there to take up a position as a mechanical engineer with pioneering keyhole surgeon Sir Alfred Cuscheri at Ninewells Hospital. Based within the Department of Surgery and Molecular Oncology, Fraser became an integral part of the research team that developed a variety of new surgical instruments and manipulators, as well as new imaging and optical techniques for laparoscopic surgery. In 1999 he then went on to work as a product development engineer for four years with Dundee by Design (DBD), a European Regional Development Funded (ERDF) Project that aimed to develop the local economy through the use of good design. Whilst there Fraser worked primarily on the design and development of new product solutions for the commercial market place, serving clients in the arts, consumer, medical, telecommunication, automotive and industrial product sectors. After a few years, Fraser took up a senior management role with DBD where he became heavily involved in the setting up of a New Product Development (NPD) Excellence Programme aimed at helping small and medium sized businesses improve their chances of new product success. In 2003 Fraser made the transition from industry to academia where he is now responsible for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and undertaking research projects in design.
