BIOGRAPHY

Emma Murphy lectures within the School of Design at the University of Dundee and also works at Graven Images, the cross-disciplinary design consultancy based in Glasgow. She is also undertaking a PhD exploring the enhancement of designer learning and application of business knowledge. Her placement in both academia and industry informs and contextualises her research and teaching, making it both relevant to those in the industry and the academic research community. In addition, Emma is an experienced researcher and linguist, having conducted a number of workplace, branding, and business development audits for international companies in the US and the UK. Emma has recently completed a two-year project with Graven Images and the School of Design on the development of tools to support the design process. Emma developed the tools with the company and the University in a collaborative process. The tools developed included a marketing toolkit, a project bidding tool, a briefing tool and a project review process. A framework for developing tools in creative organisations with high tacit knowledge was also developed. Emma strongly believes design education should incorporate an understanding of business acumen, in order to aid client-designer relationships and to enrich the design process. Her considerable work in the field of design briefing has valuable implications for practitioners, researchers and the design curriculum. Emma’s research interests include research methodology, designer understanding of business knowledge, the project briefing process, designer-client relationships and branding in interior design.
