| The
Photobiology Unit was founded for the advancement of photodermatological
diagnosis, treatment and research. Through our clinical research programme
we have attempted to refine phototheraputic treatment protocols with
evidence based recommendations for patient management. Concern over
the photocarcinogenic potential of light therapy emphasises the importance
of optimal treatment to limit unnecessary photoexposure.
Our position as a tertiary referral centre for Scotland has allowed us to create a unique epidemiological database for photosensitivity disorders. The Unit has also developed a methodology for the study of drug/light interactions, both within the laboratory and with human volunteer study techniques. The UV calibration laboratory ensures the accuracy of the dose measurements that underpin the clinical service. Our commitment to quality is exemplified in our Medical Physics ISO 9001 Registration. The Department maintains an active interest in new areas of photodermatology, with current research programmes in laser and photodynamic therapy. The Scottish Photodynamic Therapy Centre funded by the Barbara Stewart Cancer Trust is based within the Unit. |
