Our Students
Sheena MacQueen
Sheena, aged 38, has studied five credit bearing modules in Human Relations and Counselling and Management after initially enrolling on the introductory Counselling module in 2005/6. Sheena first began her studies to gain skills relevant to her employment, but after being made redundant she began to think of her studies as a route to a degree and further career opportunities.
How have you benefited from this learning?
"The tutors were both supportive and empathic. We were valued as adults who chose to undertake these courses and it was very empowering. I have gained both confidence and self-esteem since undertaking this programme of study and I now have a good sense of worth and self-belief. I have now gone on to apply for full time study and have been offered a place at Dundee University."
What advice would you give someone considering enrolling on a Continuing Education course?
"Go for it! Whatever doubts you may have on your own ability can be allayed by talking with the course tutors. Remember, everyone who is here has chosen to do so. Some of the most successful learners are the adult returners who offer their valuable life experience to the dynamic of the class. If you conceive it, you can achieve it!"
Jo Ann Carberry
Jo Ann, aged 67, has been a student with Continuing Education since 2004 when she moved to Dundee with her husband. Over the past four years Jo Ann has studied a range of courses in literature, history, media and creative writing.
How have you benefited from this learning?
"Studying was at least for me, the best way to meet people, stay active and get involved. I was able to explore many topics that I had always wanted to study but could not when I was working. The courses have kept my mind active and stimulated my curiosity. The courses have helped me build up a good social support group that I value as much as the knowledge gained."
What advice would you give someone considering enrolling on a Continuing Education course?
"Don't be afraid of signing up for something entirely new that you have never done before. Never worry that you are not up to it because of your previous academic or non academic background."
