About the University of Dundee

The University of Dundee is proud to be recognised as one of the UK’s leading universities.
Internationally renowned for its expertise across a range of disciplines including science, medicine, engineering and art. With over 100 years of experience dating back to its foundation as a university college in 1881, and over 30 years after receiving its Royal Charter as an independent university, the University of Dundee is firmly established with internationally-acknowledged strengths in teaching and research. A university which promotes translational research, develops new approaches to professional education, stimulates new ideas and technologies where disciplines intersect, it is focused on meeting the challenges of the 21st century.
The University of Dundee has undergone a period of fundamental change over recent years, realigning its resources – intellectual, financial and physical – as well as building on existing research and educational strengths to ensure success in the dynamic and competitive Higher Education sector. The University has recently completed a £200 million redevelopment programme to create state of the art platforms for teaching, research and partnership activities. It has been described as aspirational, ‘having its head in the clouds and its feet firmly on the ground’ by the Nobel Prizewinner Seamus Heaney and was recently voted one of the top five scientific work places in the world, by Scientist Magazine.
The University of Dundee was recently described by The Sunday Times as ‘one of the finest institutions in Britain where researchers routinely push back the boundaries of knowledge and teachers inspire their charges. The winners are the students lucky enough to study here’.
The University comprises four Colleges: Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing; Life Sciences; Arts & Social Sciences and Art, Science & Engineering each headed by a Vice Principal. The calibre of research at Dundee is high, with 95% of staff working in areas of national or international excellence.
We rank in the UK’s top three for research income per capita and in the top 20 for research income. Over the last three years we have attracted nearly £150 million in research income. 54% of the University’s research is achieving ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ standards in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise 2008.
Three mergers have doubled the University’s size over the last ten years to today’s complement of over 18,000 students and 3,000 staff making it one of the largest employers in the local area.
The University of Dundee has powered its way to a position as one of Scotland’s leading universities with an international reputation for excellence across a range of activities, and it is within this environment that research within the School of Nursing and Midwifery is flourishing.
