The research is driven by senior clinical researchers (Struthers, Lang, Belch, MacDonald) who, with approximately 150 other staff, make up The Tayside Institute of Cardiovascular Research. Lung disease research focuses on cystic fibrosis (Mehta) and asthma (Lipworth). Major research in cardiovascular disease focuses on biomarkers in heart failure (Struthers, Lang and colleagues), on vascular inflammatory mechanisms (Belch and colleagues) and the use of advanced record linkage and informatics to study drug safety (MacDonald and colleagues). Basic science groups complement these clinical studies, in particular Jovanovic and Fuller working on inflammatory and signalling mechanism in cardiac myocytes. Extensive Programme and Fellowship grant funding exists from BHF, MRC and government agencies, and a number of major clinical trials are funded by the pharmaceutical industry.
