Research in the School of Medicine

Research Themes

Our guiding principle is to develop and maintain excellence in research within an environment where interdisciplinary teams work together to tackle fundamental problems in human health.  The appointment and nurturing of first rate clinical and non-clinical staff is central to this mission, and our excellent research performance depends on close interactions with multiple stakeholders including the NHS, the pharmaceutical industry and a host of research institutions around the world.

Annual current research spend in the School is in the region of £30 million (2005-9), and this makes a vital contribution to the burgeoning post-industrial science and technology sector in the Tayside area which accounts for some 16% of the local economy.

 The School’s research strategy focuses on a number of key research themes, each of which takes a multi-disciplinary approach to addressing major clinical problems:
