Research in the School of Dentistry

Dental Research

Dental Research opportunities at the University of Dundee present in two linked and complementary facilities, the Dental School on the University's main campus, and the Dental Health Services and Research Unit (DHS&RU) based at the MacKenzie building in close proximity to Ninewells Hospital & School.

Research in the Dundee Dental School is carried out in an environment where there is leading international research in a number of key areas with laboratory and clinical researchers working collaboratively. Research in the Dental Health Services & Research Unit is carried out with links to both the Dental School and researchers in the Centre for Primary Care and Population Research in the Medical School. Areas judged to be world leading in Dundee (from both DHS&RU and the Dental School perspectives) are Cariology, Dental Health Services, Craniofacial Anomalies and Oral Cancer. These same themes are reflected in the recently devised Research Strategy for Scotland.

In the Dental School, research collaboration has been established with colleagues in (a) Medicine and Nursing within the College, and (b) College of Life Sciences, and is supported by multi-million biomedical research facilities. These include the Clinical Research Centre, the Translational Medicine Research Collaboration and the Institute of Medical Science and Technology (IMSAT). More recent research developments include the Tayside Clinical Trials Unit, the Tayside Academic Health Sciences Centre (TAHSC), the Centre for Population Genetics and Pharmacogenomics and the Division of Molecular Medicine.

Research in the Dental Health Services Research Unit (DHS&RU) aims towards development of improved oral health and clinically effective dental care at both the public health and individual patient levels. This research encompasses both dental and medical groupings in the College and has national and international dimensions. The Centre for Clinical Innovations (CCI) provides a cross-cutting theme of activity involving academic and commercial interests with the stimulation of knowledge transfer and the potential to improve both clinical practice and oral health.

Dental students in Dundee benefit from exposure to cutting edge research throughout their periods of study. The intercalated BMSc degree in Dentistry, which has a significant research component, has an enviable national reputation, and postgraduate research programmes in a range of disciplines are carried out simultaneously in the Dental School.

Dental research in Dundee is supported from a wide variety of sources, and includes international agencies, UK research councils, UK medical charities, industrial collaborators, the NHS and government bodies reflecting the competitiveness, standing and impact of the research.
