Patient Bank

Simulated Patients
Simulated Patients make up a scenario

Since 1997, when the University of Dundee's Patient Bank Programme was established, volunteer patients have provided an invaluable role in the development and training of healthcare professionals for the Schools of Medicine, Nursing and Midwifery and Dentistry.

The Patient Bank Programme is based in the Clinical Skills Centre which is located in Ninewells Hospital and Medical School. The Centre offers a realistic clinical setting for students to practice communication and practical skills and the facilities include consultation rooms, demonstration rooms and simulated ward areas.

A "simulated patient" (SP) is a volunteer trained to role-play symptoms or health problems to allow healthcare students to apply the skills of working in a real life healthcare setting. This allows our students to develop their communication skills and caring abilities in a safe and controlled learning environment for both the SP and the student.

As well as SPs, the Programme has a bank of volunteer "real patients" who usually have a long term medical condition which they are willing to discuss with healthcare professionals. In addition, they often have obvious signs of illness which allows senior students the opportunity to examine in the same safe and controlled learning environment.

All new recruits to the simulated patient programme are given a half day induction training workshop. Other related training sessions are organised on a regular basis and these usually consist of a briefing before certain teaching sessions take place.

Research Interests

The Patient Bank Team continually seeks to develop and enhance simulated patient encounters and have recently introduced the use of moulage. This has been particularly useful in senior year assessments including the Final Year Ward Simulation Exercises (FYWSE) and the Objective Structure Clinical Examinations (OSCE’s), as well as in our Postgraduate and Post Registration Courses for our healthcare professionals, and has clearly shown to increase the fidelity of our simulations. The Patient Bank Team have presented their findings at ASME and have run two consecutive Workshops for the Scottish Clinical Skills Network Annual Conferences.

These are some of the samples of moulage (make up)  which we used in our workshop this year at the  Scottish Clinical Skills Network conference 2010 but  that can be used for teaching purposes)

The Patient Bank Team have also assisted other Faculties in setting up similar volunteer programmes  and are currently working with the School of Law to introduce a “Simulated Client” programme using the experiences of the Clinical Skills Centre in setting up their SP programme.
