Fraser Smith obtained a First Class Honours degree in Civil Engineering from Loughborough University of Technology in 1972. He spent the next thirteen years with Sir Robert McAlpine gaining experience on a wide range of civil engineering and building contracts. He moved to the University of Dundee in 1985 and obtained his PhD on Load Path Analysis of Masonry Arches in 1991.
