Dr Moray D Newlands graduated with a BEng Honours degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Dundee in 1995 before completing an MSc in Concrete Technology, Construction and Management within the Department of Civil Engineering.

Dr Newlands' research focuses on the QPA/Industry sponsored predictive modelling solutions for carbonation-induced corrosion. This work has impacted at a European level through the publication of a CEN European Technical Specification as well as Dr Newlands being appointed Secretary of CEN TC104/WG12/TG5, the European task group on test method development. The work is also analysing electrical resistivity as a production tool to assess durability potential in concrete (in collaboration with the Institute of Construction Science, Spain). He is also examining fundamentals of early volume stability and long term deformation of concretes containing sustainable materials which will be of importance to the current revision of structural Eurocodes. In addition, he is also involved in research to examine innovative cement combinations for high performance concrete using fly ash, slag, metakaolin, silica fume and limestone.

Dr Newlands also manages an extensive knowledge transfer portfolio including the ERDF/Scottish Enterprise/Industry funded Centre for the Advancement of Small and Medium Enterprises, as well as knowledge exchange programmes to develop cold mix asphalt materials and encourage sustainable research and innovation within local organisations. In addition, he is also involved in postgraduate student recruitment drives throughout India.

Dr Newlands is also involved in the provision of Continuing Professional Development courses and has helped transfer technology in such areas as recycled aggregates, use of glass cullet in concrete, the role of cement content on performance and use of incinerator ashes in concrete.

He has also assisted in the organisation of number of International Symposia including Reuse of Incinerator Ash (2000) and Recycling and Reuse of Waste Materials (2001), Celebrating Concrete: People and Practice (2003) and Advances in Waste Management and Recycling (2003). He was secretary for the International Congresses Creating with Concrete (1999) and Challenges of Concrete Construction (2002) and Global Construction: Ultimate Concrete Opportunities (2005) and is currently secretary for the forthcoming International Congress - Concrete: Construction's Sustainable Option which will be held in Dundee on 8-10 July 2008.
