Dr Michael McCarthy graduated with a Batchelor's Degree in Civil Engineering in 1987 and obtained a PhD in 1991, both from the University of Dundee. Following research positions at the same institution during the early 1990s, he was appointed Lecturer in the Department of Civil Engineering there in 1994 and Senior Lecturer in 2002.
Dr McCarthy's main research interests lie in cement technology, in particular the use of fly ash in construction, concrete durability and performance, and construction technology.
His work on fly ash has focussed on extending the application of this by-product material. Studies in concrete have included fly ash to EN 450, high volume fly ash, moistened (conditioned) fly ash and co-combustion fly ash (produced from hard coal and secondary fuels). In several cases, full-scale trials with these materials have been made. Current work is examining fly ash recovery from stockpiles and lagoons at power stations and processing technology. He has additionally carried out work with fly ash in grouts and has recently started a project looking at using the material to mitigate sulfate swelling in lime-stabilised clays.
His work on concrete durability and performance has covered chloride ingress, carbonation, corrosion of reinforcement, sulfate attack, alkali-silica reaction, freeze/thaw and abrasion. This has focussed on behaviour of different concretes under aggressive exposure conditions and selection of materials to optimise performance. His research in the area of concrete construction technology has investigated the use of controlled permeability formwork to enhance concrete cover properties. Other studies have examined the role of cement content in durability specifications. He has also recently completed a project to consider the impact of the new range of constituent materials, including self-compacting concrete, on the pressure acting on formwork.
Dr McCarthy is actively involved in the dissemination of his work through continuing professional development events.
