Sustainable Construction and Recycling of Waste Materials

Research is addressing how concrete can play a role in containing construction, municipal and industrial wastes, such as demolition residues, MSW and sewage sludge, incinerator ash, cement kiln dust and oil drill cuttings, whilst preventing entry of toxic ions into the biosphere. Other areas of study include investigating how to recycle concrete for use as aggregates. Novel developments in processing technology are being made which will allow waste materials, such as power station lagoon and conditioned ash, to be used in concrete, rather than disposed of as landfill. A significant new area of study is considering the leachate characteristics of cementitious grout systems used in the nuclear industry.
