Academic Activities
Peter Cameron, LL.B (Joint Hons. Law & Politics) (Edinburgh University, 1974); Ph.D. (Edinburgh University, 1981), has a professional career spanning more than 30 years, specialising in public international and European law with respect to energy, and specifically oil & gas exploration and production, and gas & electricity legislative reform and regulatory issues.
Peter became the fifth Director of CEPMLP in February 2010 and is the first of its Directors to be a Scot. His principal task has been to revise the CEPMLP strategy to fit the new challenges of energy education in the second decade of the 21st century. In particular, this means that all courses and research at CEPMLP will have to demonstrate our commitment not only to academic excellent but also to the principle of sustainable development of natural resources. It also means that Peter will actively seek to build CEPMLP’s connections with other educational institutions in this field, particularly in the developing world, with a view to enhancing the teaching and research that CEPMLP offers its students.
Previously, Peter was Director of Research at CEPMLP and during his term, the CEPMLP enjoyed an unprecedented expansion in the external funding it attracted. Colleagues have attracted substantial funds from the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Council, the European Commission and the World Bank.
Prior to this, Peter was a professor at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy. He was also Director of the International Institute of Energy Law, at the University of Leiden in The Netherlands.
Peter’s main research work is now in the field of international investment law, to which he has contributed a book (see International Energy Investment Law).
Peter is the Principal Investigator of the Centre’s project, Extractive Industries Source Book, which is being carried out by a group of educational institutions supported by a grant from the World Bank. It is a comprehensive guide to Good Practice in the Oil, Gas and Mining industries which will be available online to registered users from autumn 2011.
Peter supervises PhD students in his field of research, and teaches in a number of the CEPMLP Masters degree courses on law subjects.
