David Humphreys is an independent consultant based in London.
Between 2004 and 2008 he was Chief Economist of Norilsk Nickel, Russia's largest mining company. In this role, he provided advice to the Board and senior management on the outlook for the global metals and mining industry and assisted in the formulation and implementation of group strategy. He was closely involved with the company's expansion internationally and with the development of its programme of investor relations.
Prior to joining Norilsk Nickel, David was with Rio Tinto for eighteen years, the last eight of these as the company's Chief Economist. In this capacity he served as economic advisor to the Board and was responsible for industry analysis for the Group worldwide. Also falling within his area were business impacts of climate change, regional impacts of mining and Rio's economic strategy for China.
David has written and lectured extensively on the economics of the mining and metals industries, authoring over one hundred and fifty articles and papers. Before joining Rio Tinto, David worked for nine years in UK government service, for six of these as an advisor on minerals policy. He has a bachelor's degree and PhD from the University of Wales.
David is an Honorary Lecturer at CEPMLP.
