Mining Research and Resources - National mining laws

CEPMLP's mining team continues collaboration with the International Study Group for the Review of African Mining Regimes (ISG), developed at the initiative of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the African Development Bank (AfDB) at the "Big Table" on Managing Africa's Natural Resources for Growth and Poverty Reduction, in Addis Ababa on the 1st February 2007. Chris Rogers and Dr Melaku Desta participated in the Inception Meeting of the ISG. Dr Elizabeth Bastida made a presentation on reform processes in Latin America, intended to share experiences with those in Africa, on 19 May 2008, and a follow up on 11 March 2009. Evelyn Dietsche was invited by UNCTAD for the September 2008 meeting to give a presentation on the broader issues and challenges facing the design and application of minerals taxation regimes. Elizabeth Bastida was commissioned with the preparation of a report -jointly with Ms Anida Yupari- to contribute to the mandate of the ISG with a study on mining reform processes in Africa and in Latin America.

Alumni Gabriel Bailetti and Aniekan Ukpe contributed to a compilation of mining laws under an internship programme with UNECA early in 2008.
