The EC Energy Law 1999: Reciprocity and the Gas and Electricity Directives
by Angus Johnston
Electricity has long been taken for granted in much of the western world. It is such an essential part of our everyday lives that we accept its 24 hours-a-day availability almost without thinking, at least until the bill arrives. However, recent changes in political and economic philosophy, the influence of which has bridged the Atlantic Ocean, have led numerous Governments and the European Commission to question many of our traditional assumptions about the electricity supply industry as a whole. Within the European Community, this has led to a trend of asking why energy in general, and electricity in particular, should escape the application of the basic rules of the EC Treaty, while other areas of industry have long been subject to their full force. |
