On October 15th & 16th, 2009, CEPMLP and friends honoured the work of Thomas Wälde, whose premature passing in October 2008 shocked his many friends and colleagues worldwide. Over his thirty-year career, Thomas demonstrated his prodigious talents in a number of fields of international law & policy.
A diverse group of professionals met for a symposium at the Old Course Hotel in St. Andrew's, Scotland, covering some of the most compelling topics that animated Thomas's work. Topics addressed by symposium participants included: the future for international arbitration; the work of United Nation's Special Representative on Business & Human Rights; questions of good governance and international economic development; hot topics in international natural resources and environmental law; and the development of international economic law.
The event was a great success, and deemed to be a fitting tribute to Thomas.
The symposium also saw the publication of a Liber Amicorum, a "book of love" containing essays written by Thomas' friends and colleagues. The book is available to buy online from orders@cmppublishing.com The full title is "A Liber Amicorum: Thomas Wälde - Law Beyond Conventional Thought" and is edited by Jacques Werner and Arif Hyder Ali. A more authoritative book addressing the themes of the symposium will be published in a year's time.
