PRIZES

Steve Weston Prize - Awarded annually for an outstanding essay on oil and gas law

In memory of Steve Weston, a leading practitioner of oil and gas law, particularly in developing regions, during his thirty year career with BP and then with Herbert Smith, the Trustees of the Energy, Petroleum, Mineral and Natural Resources Law and Policy Education Trust announced in 2007 an annual essay prize to be funded by BP, Shell, Herbert Smith, CMS Cameron McKenna, Linklaters and Wragges.

The Prize, to the value of £1000, is to be awarded each year beginning in 2008 to the author or authors of a 3000 word essay of outstanding merit submitted on a subject to be selected by the end of April of each year by a Panel of representatives of the six funding businesses. The Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy (the "Centre") will advertise the Prize on-line and in any other manner it deems appropriate. The Prize will be open to all applicants. The closing date for the submission of essays will be the end of September. A shortlist of up to ten essays will be selected by the Centre and the winner will then be selected by the Panel in conjunction with Steve's widow Anne and his three daughters. The Prize will be awarded in December of each year by the Trustees on the recommendation of the same Panel.

In setting the subject and making its recommendation the Panel will have regard to Steve's interest in oil and gas law in developing regions, and the need to develop the indigenous legal profession in those areas. If in any year no essay of sufficient merit is submitted, the Trustees may withhold the Prize and accumulate the monies for future years.

Laszlo Gombos Prize

Each year, the top-ranking student in the discipline of Petroleum Law will receive the Laszlo Gombos Prize in memory of one of the founding-fathers of the CEPMLP.

The fifth prize is reserved for the best graduating student from Nigeria, Mr Ameh's home country. The names of the prize-winners will be included in the Graduation Booklet.

CEPMLP Director's Medal

The CEPMLP Director's Medal is awarded annually to the student who has most effectively demonstrated sound leadership skills and participation in, and promotion of, the activities and ethos of the Centre, both internally to students and staff and externally to the wider community.
