Dundee Water Centre secures almost 445,000 euros for Lagoons project

The EU funded Lagoons project will study surface water quality and lagoon ecosystems in four European lagoons; these are the

  • Vistula Lagoon in the Baltic Sea (transboundary Poland/Russia)
  • the Tylygulskyi Lagoon in the Black Sea (Ukraine);
  • the Ria de Aveiro Lagoon in the Atlantic Ocean (Portugal)
  • and the Mar Menor in the Mediterranean Sea (Spain)

The project will study the results of anthropogenic deterioration and climate change, especially the effects of extreme weather events, on these lagoons. The main objective of the project is to contribute to a strategy for the management of lagoons through the development of a science-policy-stakeholder interface; i.e., the project seeks to contribute to the integration of the EU Water Framework Directive, Habitat Directive, the EU’s ICZM Recommendation, and the EU Marine Strategy Directive.

The PI for Dundee is Professor Geoffrey D. Gooch, and leading members of the team are Dr. Sarah Hendry and Mr. Andrew Allan. The Dundee team will organize and coordinate the work on stakeholder participation and qualitative scenarios in river basins, coastal zones and lagoons. The EU contribution to the Center is 443560 EURO.
