Welcome to Personal Development Planning (PDP) at the University of Dundee
Personal Development Planning typifies our approach to learning, where our successes owe much to the excellence of our degree programmes, the commitment of our lecturers, the high quality of our student support services and the enthusiastic way we have embraced eLearning.
This process of enhancing and developing students' learning experiences and employability is supported by the My PDP online resource. My PDP should give all students who engage with it an edge in the competitive jobs market.
What else?
- PDP uses state-of-the-art ePortfolios offered via My Dundee, the University's student eLearning portal, and the activities involved can easily be integrated with coursework, as well as with extra-curricular activities.
- PDP can help our students develop personal and career goals, focus their approach to academic studies and extracurricular activities and generally raise awareness of opportunities to provide evidence of graduate skills and attributes.
- Portfolios can be shared online with tutors, advisors and potential employers.

What PDP can do for you
What is Personal Development Planning (PDP) and My PDP?
PDP in higher education is a structured process to help you reflect on your own learning, performance and achievements, in order to construct action points to develop your employability. By creating an online ePortfolio, you can also share selected information with others.
PDP at the University of Dundee is called My PDP and has been designed to support you as you engage with the PDP process, to help you plan your personal, educational and career development. You may work through My PDP, either as directed by your School, as part of a module or programme, or as an individual. You will find it under the My PDP tab in My Dundee.
Why do PDP?
As you work through the materials on My PDP, there will be help to:
- get started in planning for the future in a timely way
- make the most of your time at the University of Dundee
- record your progress online via an ePortfolio
- improve your employment prospects by focusing on your transferable skills
How does PDP work?
By using the advice and examples available on My PDP, PDP helps you to:
- think about where you are now, where your interests lie, what your strengths/weaknesses are and the improvements you would like to achieve
- plan where you want to go, what skills and knowledge you need to get there and how you will acquire them via learning opportunities open to you
- take action, set personal targets, work towards these and record the progress you have made
- reflect on your learning and achievements and areas for further personal, academic and career development.
By creating a PDP Portfolio, using the templates available on My PDP, it is easy to choose what information to share with your tutors, careers adviser, family or friends.

Introduction and Background
My PDP has been designed as an in-house resource by the Careers Service, the Library and Learning Centre, academic Schools and students. It is available on My Dundee to support students with their educational, personal and career planning. It can be used generically by individual students, but works best if embedded in School based modules or programmes. All evidence to date suggests that staff support is crucial in encouraging students to engage in the process. For more information refer to 'Aspect E - engaging academic staff' in this QAA Scotland publication, written by University of Dundee staff: A Toolkit for enhancing PDP strategy, policy and practice in higher education institutions.
Personal Development Planning (PDP) Policy at the University of Dundee was ratified by Senate and Court in academic year 2004-2005, allowing a vle-based resource to be made available across the university. Prior to that, many individual Schools were already engaged in similar processes, often linked to their Professional Statutory Bodies.
For more detail on the key stages of implementation, read Key Stages in the development and implementation of PDP at the University of Dundee [N.B currently being updated as a word doc]and backgound information from the PDP Policy 2004.
