Advocating Together (Dundee)


Advocating Together (Dundee) is a local Scottish charity that supports adults with Learning Disabilities who live with in and around Dundee. It is an independent self-advocacy organisation which has been developing people's communication skills, confidence and ability to voice their views and influence those who provide services for over 14 years. Volunteers have been involved from early on in the life of the organisation and are essential to the work we do. Our volunteers must have commitment and belief in improving the quality of life for people with learning disabilities.

Advocating Together (Dundee) can offer a worthwhile and a variety of volunteering opportunities including self-advocacy assistants, management committee members, fundraising and producing PR material. Africa and Asia Venture


Africa Asia Venture is for motivated students and graduates of 18-24, who want to spend 3-5 months teaching a wide variety of subjects, especially English and sports - or doing community based projects in Africa (Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Malawi, ) Mexico, Thailand, Nepal, China and the Indian Himalayas. Comprehensive training in TEFL, relevant languages, local religion, history, culture & customs is provided, plus accommodation, food, a local living allowance and a donation to your school/project. Excellent community and conservation projects are available in Costa Rica and Ecuador. Departures are around September, January and May. A 3-week period of travel is included in all our Ventures and a 5-8 day safari is part of the scheme.

Alternatively, shorter Ventures of 5 weeks that include building projects, safaris and adventure are also available in Thailand, Mexico, South Africa, Kenya and Uganda.

Alternatives Format Service, University of Dundee


The University of Dundee is starting a service to produce books and other printed material for students with special needs or learning difficulties (Blind, Visually impaired, motor difficulties).

We will produce may differing formats including: Braille, large print, Audio, e-text. We require volunteers to give 1 or more hours a week during library opening hours. Volunteers will be asked to: Volunteers will gain expertise in proof reading, Advance document formatting, and be exposed to a wide range of literature.

Amina - The Muslim Women's Resource Centre


Amina MWRC works with mainstream agencies and policy makers, to enhance their understanding of the Muslim community and of barriers that prevent Muslim women from accessing services and participating in society. Volunteering with MWRC gives you a chance to learn new skills, meet new people and gives you access to training. Angus Council Countryside Ranger Service provides a comprehensive year round programme of events and a wide range of facilities for visitors, schools and groups to the Country Parks and other sites in the Angus area, including Crombie, Forfar, Monikie Country Parks, Glendoll Ranger centre and Montrose Basin.

Barnardo's Dundee family Support Team is a community based support service for families from any culture which include a child who has a significant learning disability aged 0-19.

We provide a range of groups and activities (see below) to allow parents to "recharge their batteries" or to spend quality time with their other children. Volunteers play an essential role in the Projects work. Without the valuable help of committed, caring and reliable volunteers, the range of services we provide would be severely limited.

Brae Riding for the Disabled


The Brae Riding for the Disabled in Dundee offers opportunities to ride for disabled adults and children in the area. We require volunteers to get horses ready for lessons and to assist riders to enjoy their riding. CAIR Scotland - ECLIPS Recovery & Moving on Service


ECLIPS works with individuals 16+ living in Tayside who have experienced a substance misuse problem. We provide 1:1 support and have a variety of groupwork to encourage engagement with others in recovery as well as to build confidence, self esteem and coping skills. We also support individuals to access community activities, training and voluntary opportunities. Those wishing to volunteer with us should be non-judgemental, use a person centred approach and have good communication skills. The volunteer would assist the ECLIPS team to deliver the groupwork aspect of the programme therefore experience of delivering groupwork would be of benefit although no specific experience is necessary as training and guidance will be provided.

Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland


Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland provides care and support throughout Scotland for people affected by these conditions, as well as their families and other carers.     Deafblind Scotland is a charity supporting those how have lost or are losing both their sight and hearing. We support 700 dual sensory impaired people throughout Scotland providing activities, training, specialist guiding and communication support, information and advice to them, their families and professionals. We have launched a "Field Of Dreams" campaign to raise funds to build a Centre of Excellence for deafblind people just outside Glasgow.     DightyConnect works with volunteers to enable them to undertake environmental and cultural projects linked to the Dighty Burn in eastern Dundee.     Dundee Independent Advocacy Support


    Dundee Independent Advocacy Support provides independent advocacy within the city of Dundee to people who have certain support needs. We work with people with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, mental ill-health, dementia and frailty in old age, who are unable to speak up for themselves and have no one independent in their lives to support them to do so.

    Volunteers may be citizen advocates or issue based advocates.     Languages for All - Humanities, University of Dundee


    The Languages for All Programme offers an exciting selection of languages, mainly taught in the evening by professional experienced tutors. Accredited courses include French, German and Spanish and also less widely taught languages such as Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Japanese, Latin and Russian.

    LIFT OFF


    LIFT OFF is the Fife and Tayside 'Schools for Higher Education Programme'. We deliver activities throughout the year to S3-S6 pupils in 12 secondary schools in the area. Our aim is to raise awareness of and increase access to Higher Education among young people who traditionally face barriers to post-school education. Student volunteers are an essential part of our team - helping students build an accurate impression of what being a student is really like and helping them to see that college and university are real options for them. We really value our student volunteers because they make a genuine difference to our work and can make a big impression on the pupils we work with. The ChildLine Schools Service wants children to know this and is working towards ensuring that every primary school child understands abuse, knows how to protect themselves and has an awareness of how to get help and support. You could be part of the reason a child stays safe.

    How would I be helping children? The ChildLine Schools Service volunteers are central to the delivery of this exciting service. The volunteer role involves presenting safeguarding assemblies and interactive workshops to primary school aged children. This role provides the opportunity to work directly with groups of children and make a significant impact on their lives.

    READ International


    READ International works to improve access to education in Tanzania where the secondary school syllabus is almost identical to the UK, but teachers often lack the resources they need to teach. We work in over 25 Universities to empower students to collect unused books, and raise money.     The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is the charity that saves lives at sea. The RNLI is independent of Government and continues to rely on voluntary contributions and legacies for its income. The charity depends on volunteers who make up 97% of our people. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824, its lifeboats and - since 2001 - its lifeguards have saved more than 139,000 lives. All our volunteers perform essential tasks to help the RNLI save lives at sea.     RUDA UK


    RUDA UK is a small group of 6 individuals currently supporting the building a nursery and primary school at Namanditi in the Ruvuma region of Tanzania. The first phase of four classrooms has been open since March this 2011 and at the moment there are 29 children attending the school all sponsored by friends of RUDA UK. In January we expect the number at the school to increase to 60 and are busy converting one of the classroom blocks into dormitories. We recently held a successful Art auction in Glasgow in November but need new ideas for more fundraising to allow us to continue building more classrooms. We are keen to increase the members of our group and are looking for a new treasurer. It would be great to have some help with fundraising and with improving the design of our website. In the future we hope to build a house on the site where visitors can stay and teach at the school.

    In a holistic way we support families and their children 0 - 4years. At present operating only on a Monday the group runs from 10.30 - 2.30 with a free lunch provided at 12.00.     Tayside Cancer Support


    Tayside Cancer Support offer a one to one befriending service to anyone affected by cancer whether it be patient, carer, relative or friend. This service is free and confidential and is offered by volunteers who have all undergone a professional training course and who continue to get ongoing training and supervision. Befrienders also visit the Maggies Centre, Wards 32 and 34 in Ninewells Hospital (main cancer units) and Roxburghe House.     The Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia is recruiting English speaking people to teach the English language in Georgian public schools through the program Teach and Learn with Georgia by giving the schoolchildren interactive classes and communicating with them on a daily basis.

    The Butterfly Trust provides support to people affected by Cystic Fibrosis throughout Scotland. Cystic Fibrosis is a progressive, life limiting condition that causes chronic lung disease and digestive problems. People who have Cystic Fibrosis require an intensive daily treatment regime, carried out at home, that is demanding, stressful and expensive. Our aim is to relieve some of the pressures they live with. We provide practical support, financial help, advocacy (for education, employment, housing and disability benefit issues), transport, befriending and massage therapy for young people with the condition.

    Xchange Scotland provide the opportunity to participate in volunteer projects all over the world, there are over 1300 diverse and exciting International Volunteer Projects (IVPs) to choose from. By being part of an amazing network we are able to send volunteers to over 40 countries worldwide on IVPs and to host similar projects in Scotland. These partnerships mean that volunteer costs are kept to a minimum and that the projects are locally-led and are what the communities really need.

    IVP's last between 2-4 weeks and cover a range of different themes such as environmental, social, construction work, teaching.
