Statement of Service for Students and Graduates
Careers Service Mission Statement
The Careers Service aims to enhance the career development of all University
of Dundee Students and Graduates.
The Mission Statement is delivered through the services detailed in this
statement and is offered to:
- All current matriculated students of the University of Dundee, including distance learning students
- All University of Dundee graduates
- Graduates of other universities within a year of graduating
- Prospective students
- Other graduates
- Staff of the University of Dundee (Please see separate Statement of
Service for Staff) (N.B. Our priority is to serve current
students and recent graduates of the University of Dundee. Therefore services
for groups c, d & e above may be restricted to certain times of
the year.)
Individual Guidance Interviews
- 30 minute Guidance Interviews, which can be booked in advance
- Maximum waiting time: 2 weeks
Drop-In Sessions
10 minute advice interviews to answer specific questions, normally available
Monday - Friday, 12 Noon to 2.00 pm.
Computer Guidance Programmes
Prospects Planner is available on student computers in the Careers
Service and available via the internet from the Prospects website.
Students are encouraged to use this in conjunction with advice from
a Careers Adviser.
Careers Advice
Where appropriate advice via email, telephone or in writing within
5 working days.
Information
Information is provided on occupational, employment, voluntary and
learning opportunities in a variety of formats, and is relevant to the range
of opportunities available to students and recent graduates of the University
of Dundee. Information Adviser assistance is offered daily in the Careers
Hub - CV Checks, JobShop queries, employer and occupation queries.
Primarily on a self help bassic, Upstairs@Careers offers job searching facilitites,
funding and further study information and access to "take away" information.
The Careers Service aims to:
- Ensure all resources are comprehensive, current, of good quality and
free of bias.
- Review annually the information resources and keep as up-to-date as
possible. (Some information is older, but not more than 10%
of the information available will be more than 2 years old.)
- Catalogue the information resources in accordance with the AGCAS Occupational
classification.
- Ensure that information resources are relevant to the current degrees
offered at the University of Dundee.
- Support all users of the Careers Service including prospective students,
current students, graduates and university staff (including
international, disabled, part-time and distance learning users).
- Make provision for clients who are unable to access our in-house information
resources by making alternative arrangements.
- Ensure that staff are available to assist users.
- Respond to written, email and telephone queries within 5 working days.
Careers Education
The Careers Service offers a range of Careers Education sessions, primarily
to current students.
- Credit bearing Careers Planning Module and Internship module delivered
by the Careers Service. Available where degree pathway
permits and in consulation with your school.
- Specific seminars open to all on a range of topics e.g. interview
techniques.
- School / Subject based seminars.
- Employer led information and skills seminars.
Vacancy and Employer Information
In order to ensure that we are objective and impartial in our dealings with
employers and students, we subscribe to the AGCAS/AGR/NUS Code of Best
Practice in Graduate Recruitment (1995 version) and the NASES Code of Good
Practice for Part-time Employment. The Careers Service will act as a 'one-stop
shop' to meet employer recruitment needs and develop contacts within the
University.
- Employers can expect Careers Service staff to be professional, courteous
and helpful.
- Employers making contact for the first time can expect a response
within 5 working days.
- The Careers Service will conduct a bi-annual review of our employer
database.
- Vacancy information is available via the JobShop website and is updated
daily.
- Employer information is displayed within our Careers Hub and Upstairs@Careers
and is retained for up to 2 years.
- Careers Fairs are offered on campus for purposes of information and
recruitment. We seek to invite a wide range of opportunity
providers.
- Employers are welcome to participate in relevant career education
sessions as appropriate.
- Publicity is provided for employer visits and events. We provide
employers access to relevant students at our discretion.
- Accommodation for employers conducting selection interviews and tests
is offered in-house.
- The Careers Service is happy to advertise on behalf of recruitment
agencies only when: - The agency states which employer
it represents and we are satisfied that such representation is clearly in
the interest of students.
The JobShop
The JobShop, housed within the Careers Service, aims to help matriculated
University of Dundee students find graduate, finalist, work experience,
part time work and legal vacancies. It aims to be a central place where
employers can source high quality staff for their businesses.
The JobShop:
- Will endeavour to ensure that information passed on to students is
accurate and up to date.
- Will ensure that all vacancies advertised are on an equal opportunities
basis and, unless specified, are open to all University of
Dundee students.
- Will ensure part-time vacancies are advertised to University of Dundee
students only.
Referral Policy
We refer students and graduates to other services and agencies as
appropriate and where possible to a named individual.
If there is a clear professional need, and with the individual's
consent, the Careers Service will conduct a follow-up. On
all other occasions, follow-up is from the student on a voluntary basis.

What We Expect From Students and Graduates
- To inform us of the need to cancel appointments and attendance at
events signed up for in advance.
- To use all Careers Service computers appropriately i.e. for careers
related purposes only
- To respect staff and other users
- To provide feedback on services provided
- To provide destination information
- To understand that the Careers Service offers advice in good faith
on the basis of the best information available to it. Clients
of our service must take responsibility for their own decisions based
on such advice
Feedback
The Careers Service constantly encourages feedback on all our services
and aims to act upon all suggestions received.
We hope you find no cause to complain about our service. In case
you do, you are invited to first approach the member
of staff concerned or our Director, Graham Nicholson (emails to careers@dundee.ac.uk).
If you do not receive acknowledgement of your complaint within five
working days, or are dissatisfied with the response
you receive, you are invited to put your complaint in writing and are directed
