Profile:
Alan Bell is the University's Records Manager and Information Compliance Officer. He is responsible for the oversight of the Records Management Service and the University's compliance with information legislation such as the Data Protection and Freedom of Information (Scotland) Acts. His role includes the implementation and maintenance of the University's systems for records and information management and information compliance and the provision of specialist advice and training in these areas.
Alan is also the Programme Leader for the University's Masters Programmes in Records Management by Distance Learning, offered by the Centre for Archive and Information Studies (CAIS). He co-authored, with Susan Graham of the University of Edinburgh, the course 'Complying With Information Legislation: Principles and Practice'. He has also teaches the courses 'Wider Legal Frameworks' and 'Comparative Concepts in Information Rights'. He has previously taught the course 'Principles and Practice of Records Management' and supervises Masters dissertations.
Alan represents the University at the Scottish Higher Education Information Practitioners Group (SHEIP) and is the Secretary of the Forum for Archives and Records Management Education and Research (FARMER). He is also the Vice Chair of the Scottish Labour History Society. He has served previously on the Education, Training and Development Committee and the Committee of the Records Management Group of the Society of Archivists, the Council of the Scottish Records Association, the Political Parties and Parliamentary Archives Group, UK, the Archives Sub-Committee of the Society for the Study of Labour History and was the representative of the National Library of Scotland to the International Association of Labour History Institutions.
Alan is a graduate of the University of Dundee (MA hons Modern History). He has previously been employed as a Curator of Manuscripts at the National Library of Scotland and as the Assistant Archivist for Perth and Kinross Council.
