Administrative/Biographical History
The firm was established as J & J Ogilvie c.1806, possibly by James Ogilvie and his brother, John. It represented many of the landed families in the area, particularly the Estate of Duntrune, as well as local companies such as Gourlay Bros & Co. George Ogilvie, who continued the practice until his death in 1912, was one of the founders of Dundee Social Union. In 1973-4 the name of the firm changed to Ogilvie, Cowan & Co.

Administrative/Biographical History
Duntrune was first granted to Walter Northington by King Robert Bruce and later appears to have passed to the Ogilvies of Easter Powrie, who were in possession by the beginning of the 15th century. The estate then passed to the Scrymgeours, Viscounts of Dudhope and Constables of Dundee, before it was acquired by Walter Graham in the early seventeenth century.
The Grahams of Duntrune were closely related to the Grahams of Fintry and Claverhouse; Walter Graham was the son of John Graham, who was the second son of Sir Robert Graham of Fintry. The estate remained in the Graham family until 1802, when Alexander Graham of Duntrune died without issue. His sisters Amelia (the wife of Patrick Stirling of Pittendreich) and Clementina (wife of Captain Gavin Drummond of Keltie) became his co-heirs. Mr and Mrs Stirling assumed the surname and arms of the Graham family, and were succeeded first by their son William Stirling Graham, who died without issue, and then by their daughter Clementina Stirling Graham, the author of Mystifications. She died in 1877 and was succeeded by her nephew John Edmund Lacon.
