Papers and Correspondence of James Dalyell

Dates of creation: 1814-1883
Extent: 1 box (0.12 linear metres) The records are on paper.
Name of Creator: Thomas Thornton, Son & Co, James Dalyell and John James Dalyell

Administrative/Biographical History

James Dalyell, born in Edinburgh on 24 July 1798, was the illegitimate son of Sir James Dalyell, 5th Bart of the Binns, Linlithgow. He entered the Royal Navy in 1814 as a Volunteer and was stationed at St. Helena at the time of the death there of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1821. On qualifying as a ship's mate Dalyell served in the West Indies and was promoted to Lieutenant in 1826 on board the 'Tweed'. In 1827 he left the Navy and was placed on the half pay list. He went to live in France, and while there made strenuous attempts to secure a commission and promotion for himself mainly by seeking the assistance of his father. In France he made contact with his half-brother, Francis Aubert, but was repulsed by his mother. Dalyell undertook a series of extensive walking tours in France, with the aim of including descriptions of his experiences in a traveller's guide to France. In about 1835 he fathered a child, John James Dalyell, and married the mother, Marie Anne. Discouraged by his father from returning to Britain, Dalyell stayed on in France, mainly at Tarbes, until 1838. From 1838-1841 he served in the Coast Guard Service, mainly at Jury's Gap and Buckie.

In 1841 he was re-commissioned in the Royal Navy as 1st Lieutenant aboard 'HMS Champion', stationed in the Pacific and off the NW coast of Mexico. In 1845 he left the Navy and rejoined the Coast Guard Service, serving at Burnmouth, Berwick, Stonehaven, Carnoustie and Buckie. From 1841 Dalyell conducted long correspondences with his uncles, Colonel (later General) Robert Dalyell, and Captain William Cunningham Cavendish Dalyell R.N., Governor of the Royal Hospital, Greenwich. It was not until 1859 that James Dalyell was granted a pension by the Coast Guard Service and enabled to retire under the designation of Commander. He lived at West Point House, Carnoustie, with his wife and son up to his death on 18 September 1869.

Papers and Correspondence of John James Dalyell

Dates of creation: 1839-1897
Extent: 0.45 linear metres The records are on paper.
Name of Creator: Thomas Thornton, Son & Co and John James Dalyell

Administrative/Biographical History

John James Dalyell, son of James Dalyell and Marie Ann Dalyell, was born in France c.1835. He was brought up in Scotland, mainly at Carnoustie. He became a commission merchant and agent of the Royal Insurance Co, Dundee, specialising in setting rates for the transportation of jute products as well as dealing with industrial and domestic property insurance.

Dalyell was an active member of a number of local organisations and clubs. He was instrumental in establishing the 3rd Forfarshire Artillery Volunteers, in which he served as Lieutenant and later Captain of B. Battery, and took a prominent role in the administrative business of the corps. Dalyell was a keen sportsman, being a member of the Angus and Mearns Rifle Association, Dundee Cricket Club, and the Caledonian Union, Dalhousie, and Monifieth Golf Clubs. He was Captain and later Honorary Secretary of the Caledonian Union Golf Club, Carnoustie, for whom he was an enthusiastic advocate and promoter. Dalyell tried his hand at authorship, and a number of his stories survive mainly in draft copy. They are generally humorous accounts of sporting excursions.

In the early months of 1872 Dalyell contracted what became a serious illness, being chiefly afflicted with severe head pains. In its initial stages the malady resulted in several months spent travelling, but it soon became serious enough for Dalyell to give up his work with, first, the Royal Insurance Co, and then with William Shiels & Co, wine merchants of Leith, whom he had joined in late 1872. By summer 1873 Dalyell was forced to sever all his social and sporting ties with the area. He was admitted into the Royal Lunatic Asylum, Montrose, at about this time, and it appears that he was detained there, possibly until his death, which occurred some time after 1897.

Scope and Content
