The firm of Thomas Thornton, Son & Co was formed c. 1880 when Thomas Thornton set up with his son William. Thomas Thornton had previously been in partnership with James Patullo as Patullo & Thornton. In 1972 Messrs Thomas Thornton, Son & Co merged with Messrs Dickie, Gray, MacDonald and Fair, to form Thornton and Dickie WS. In 1982 the firm became Thornton, Dickie and Brand WS, and is now known as Thorntons WS Solicitors & Estate Agents.

Administrative/Biographical History
The North British Railway Company was incorporated in 1844, gaining authorisation to operate a line running from Berwick to Edinburgh with a four mile long branch line running to Haddington. The main line opened in 1846 with the branch line operating from 1856.
The North British soon expanded its influence both by absorbing rival railway companies (for example the Edinburgh and Glasgow line was taken over in 1865), and by becoming involved in large building projects such as the building of the Tay rail bridge in 1878 and, in a joint venture with the Midland and the Great Northern and North Eastern companies, the building of the Forth rail bridge in 1881. The North British Railway Company was absorbed into the London and North Eastern Railway Company in 1923.

Administrative/Biographical History
The Dundee and Arbroath Railway Company was incorporated in May 1836, the line opening in October 1838 from a temporary station at Craigie, Dundee, and becoming fully operational by April 1840. In August 1848 the line was leased to the Dundee and Perth Railway Company, and in 1862 this company was absorbed by the Scottish North Eastern Railway Company. Control then passed to the Caledonian Railway Company, who latterly leased it to the Aberdeen Railway Company. In 1880 it was passed to the Caledonian Railway/North British Railway Company, and finally in 1923 to the London & North Eastern Railway/London, Midland & Scottish Railway Company.
The Kirkcaldy District Railways ran between Cowdenbeath and Kirkcaldy. It was used for freight only and was built to relieve the neighbouring mainlines of some traffic.

Grange, near Monifieth, was the ancient seat of the Durhams. By 1771 the estate was owned by Charles Hunter Esquire. It was later owned by Thomas Kerr, and when he died, in 1879, the estate passed to Alexander Anderson Esq.

Administrative/Biographical History
The Grahame family is an ancient one, which can trace its history back to the early 12th Century, and the family were styling themselves 'of Morphie' by 1398. By the mid 19th Century the estate had passed from the last male line of Morphie, to his cousin, a representative-male of Barclay of Balmiquuan, on the condition that he and his heirs bear the name and arms of Grahame of Morphie only. It appears that the family deeds were sold at that time. In 1852 the estate was increased with the purchase of Stone O'Morphie from J R Scott Esquire.

Administrative/Biographical History
Thornton Castle, near Laurencekirk in the parish of Marykirk, Kincardineshrie is known to date back to at least 1531. It was an ancient seat of the Strachan family. The property was acquired by Alexander Crombie, an advocate and land agent, in 1804, was considerably refurbished in the following years, and was later owned by Sir Thomas Thornton.

Inventories and valuations of furniture etc., in Thornton Castle, Laurencekirk belonging to Mrs Thornton and Miss Scott and 13 plans of buildings belonging to the Thornton Estate surveyed by Northern Assurance Co Ltd.
