Background and Teaching

I graduated in Architecture at Dundee in 1992, went straight in to practice and passed my professional exams in 1993. I worked in practice in the Tayside area full time until 2001 when I accepted a fractional teaching post at the School of Architecture. My practice role by this time was 'visualiser', modelling my practice's designs and producing visuals for design development, planning and funding. In 2003 the fractional teaching post became a full time post when a vacancy arose. Having 'grown up' with the rise of use of computing in Architecture I was well placed to take my skills from practice in to teaching.

My joining Dundee University coincided with their adoption of the Blackboard Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), with my teaching being centred on use of software packages, I found this digital teaching tool was an excellent vehicle for my teaching material. My students find my practicals available at all times in screen grabbed video format, audio of lectures with accompanying slides and their assignments are set and submitted back via the VLE making life easier for them and for me and my team.

Shouts out at this point to the main team: Keith Robson (Sketching), Mike Allardice (Writing), Doug Pearson (Drafting, Model Making and Casting), Bob McGilvray (Artistic Workshops) and Colin Wishart (Architectural Photography).

Details of Teaching

I teach on, and co-ordinate, 4 modules at undergraduate level, support levels 3, 4 and 5, and my colleagues, in all their CAD, laser cutting and graphics work.

The modules are broad in content and variety:

AR11010 (Communications 1.1)
Focuses on basics of architectural CAD and manual drafting, model making, academic writing and freehand sketching.
AR12006 (Communications 1.2)
Introduces 3D CAD, desktop publishing and focuses on using PhotoShop for architectural rendering. Workshops for form/tone/shadow, expressive drawing and photomontage are also included.
AR21006 (Communications 2.1)
3D CAD skills using AutoCAD, options include photography, life drawing, parametric 'unfolding' and casting.

Fergus Low with laser cut roof form model (L2 option)

AR22006 (Communications 2.2)
Architectural visualisation using 3D Studio Max, parametrics introduction and written and spoken presentation techniques complete the communications modules set. All these modules are examined closely to ensure all students attain the relevant skills which will equip them to take up architectural assistant posts during vacations and practical training positions.
